On Snobbishness

I'll admit it. In the past I have been a bit of a snob...a diaper snob, that is. Starting with my oldest, I used ONLY Huggies or Pampers, whoever was better at the time (Doesn't it always seem like they are always changing something or other about their diapers? One will change then the other will one up them...it is a diaper game of leap frog). Now, don't get me wrong, I didn't insist on Supremes, but it was Name Brand diapers for my kids.

There were a few times that I did try store brand diapers, but my experiences with them were definitely negative. I usually ended up with leaking, torn tabs, and occasionally the whole diaper would fall apart.

So, for years I insisted on name brands...rarely condescending to buy LUVs. (And with 5 kids, all who insist that they are NOT ready to potty train until they are 3 and a 1/2, I have single handedly kept the diaper industry afloat). But fast forward to the current economic crisis. My grocery budget was not increasing and my money was not going as far. I needed to find a way to cut back, so I started buying LUVs diapers. They were fine, no complaints...but grocery prices continued to grow...and I had a week where my grocery budget was a little extra tight...I paced back and forth, eyeing the Parent's Choice diapers (Wal Mart Brand); their discounted price was calling to me. But my mind was haunted by discount diaper nightmares...leaking, torn tabs, and falling apart..Oh My! But I gave in to the siren call of money saved and the yellow package made it's way into my cart. I hoped that I wouldn't experience buyers remorse at each diaper change.

I must admit, I was pleasantly surprised. They came equipped with everything my name brand diapers had. Stretchy fit, cloth like feel, even the stretch side tabs! Each week it got easier to put that yellow package in my cart, passing by the red, green and purple packages who still whispered to me that they were better. I am now a convert to Parents Choice diapers. They run about half the price of Huggies and Pampers, and about 30% cheaper than LUVs. For this Mommy of five, with two in diapers, the savings are huge.

I did try the Target brand diapers about a month ago, and I must admit that I was a bit disappointed. They were not as soft, their side tabs not as stretchy, and I experienced night time leaking.

I am right there with you. I've tried them all, including the Costco brand diapers (which I HATED). I am a huge Pampers fan, myself (they are slightly powder scented and therefore don't smell as bad when they're wet). But, last summer I needed some diapers when I was in Utah visiting my folks and my mom bought me some Parent's Choice brand. And I, too, was pleasantly surprised. They worked just as well as my Pampers and better than Huggies. They were just as good (minus the powder scent) and so much cheaper. I used them for a while, then forgot. Thanks for the reminder, now that I'm back to two in diapers and even less money than before.

i have always used huggies and only huggies. but a year or 2 ago i tried the parent's choice and they did not have the stretchy tabs which is a must. maybe i'll have to try again...
i have heard the costco diapers are the exact same as huggies, they just use a diff. conveyor belt, but i have yet to test that idea.
food for thought, thanks :)

What a great post... I was cracking up! I've heard good things before about the WalMart brand daipers... we may have to break down and buy them now that we have two in diapers!

Pampers Swaddlers were my favorite for the newborn stage. Then, we used Huggies for toddlerhood. Luvs didn't seem to work as well. We never tried any other brands...and our daughter is potty-trained now (hooray!).

Hmmmm... I've only used Huggies (occasionally Pampers) for the past 5 years because I too am a diaper snob. I've been helping you keep them afloat. :) I'm down to my last in diapers but it's never too late for an old dog to learn new tricks. Next time I (I mean my husband) passes that yellow package, I'll (I mean my husband) will need to pick some up! Can you tell I don't grocery shop? LOL

Did you experience night time leaking on the Target diapers, or did one of the kids? If it was you I can think of one problem just off the top of my head.

Dear Anonymous,
It was a shared experience..he leaked...I had to clean...so I truly experienced the night leaking =)

Luvs were my favorite! Unfortuantely Walmart had not got in on the diaper scene that much yet!

I tried the KMART brand and I was very dissapointed so I just stuck with what we've always known... I have thought about trying Parent's Choice, but I just can't bring myself to do it. I am pampers all the way! I will say that I gave in and tried parent's choice wipes, and I was surprised with them. I am a huggies wipes fan, but they are comparable. I can't stand pampers wipes.

Hmm. I may have to try them. Thanks for the post.

I'm not a fan of the Parent's Choice, at least when Brady was younger. That was the last time I tried them BUT I actually LOVE the Costco kind.

I buy whatever I can get cheapest at the time. Lately it has been walgreens and riteaid brands. They are surprisingly good. And when they have them buy one get one free....who can resist-even cheaper than walmart. Last week (for anyone that cares) I got 3 packages of pampers cruisers for $4! Yes you read it right! They were
$30 (3 x $10 each)
-3 (3 x $1 coupon)
-3 (3 x $1 doubler coupon at albertsons)
-------
$24 right? Then I got a coupon that printed out for $20 off your next purchase in groceries. I bought my $20 worth of groceries and really only spent $4 on 3 packages of diapers....Did I mention that I did this deal 5 times. I just kept rolling the coupons into more daipers-yes bought 15 packs for $20-added them to my stockpile under Siena's bed:)
